History of Palm Beach Gardens

Before Palm Beach Gardens real estate was developed and the city was incorporated, the land primarily consisted of cattle ranch land and pine forests, as well as some swampland further west. In 1959, a gentleman by the name of John D. MacArthur set forth his plans to develop 4,000 acres of the land. A wealthy landowner and insurance tycoon, MacArthur chose to name the land Palm Beach Gardens, after his first choice of Palm Beach City was denied. The Florida Legislature denied this name due to its similarity to the nearby city of Palm Beach.

In the year the land was set forth for development (1959), the city of Palm Beach Gardens was incorporated as a “paper town,” meaning that the city was not yet built and only existed on paper. By 1960, the city area officially garnered a population of one. The sole resident was a squatter, whom MacArthur permitted to stay on his property. After 1960, Palm Beach Gardens real estate development rapidly advanced, and ten years later, the city boasted a population of approximately 7,000 residents.

In order to showcase the new community, MacArthur decided to purchase an impressive, 80-year-old banyan tree that was located in nearby Lake Park. The tree was slated to be cut down in order to enlarge a dentist’s office. The removal and transport of the tree cost MacArthur around $30,000 and its relocation took more than 1,000 hours of manpower. During the move, as the tree crossed over the Florida East Coast Railway, it shifted and disconnected the Western Union telephone and telegraph lines that ran next to the railroad. This episode cut off most communications between the city of Miami and the outside world, until the damage was repaired.

MacArthur loved the tree so much for his Palm Beach Gardens community that he had a second banyan moved to the city the following year.

Today, the two banyan trees still remain at the center of Palm Beach Garden’s MacArthur Boulevard, near Northlake Boulevard, and the trees are prominently featured on the city shield. Recently, in January of 2007, artist Alexandre Renoir introduced a painting to Palm Beach Gardens that depicts the city’s banyan tree. Renoir is the great-grandson of famous impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. His painting is currently on display at the Palm Beach Gardens City Hall on the North Military Trail.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the growth of Palm Beach Gardens real estate remained slow yet steady. The population at that time had not yet reached the count of 55,000, a number that MacArthur had envisioned at the onset of his city creation. However, the slow growth would soon change. The opening of the 1.3 million square foot Gardens Mall in 1988 kicked off a new wave of city development. Palm Beach Gardens real estate skyrocketed at this point and growth continued well throughout the 1990s. In 1999, approximately 5,000 acres in the city were sold by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The property was quickly developed, leading to additional growth of Palm Beach Gardens real estate.
